It is Snowing At Nordic Village

Well not actually at the moment but by Thursday we should have a few inches of the white, fluffy stuff!  A perfect time for its arrival, a three day weekend ahead!  Time to load up the car, dust off that ski gear and head on up.  We are all here waiting with smiles on our faces and discounted ski tickets in hand.  Don’t forget we have tickets to all of the area mountains for your convenience, Cranmore, Black Mountain, Wildcat, Attitash, Bretton Woods and King Pine. If you are not a skier, try out the tubing hill at Cranmore or one of the mountain coasters at either Cranmore or Attitash.  Oh, there is always shopping at OVP Settler’s Green.  So much to do in a three day weekend, hopefully you will find time to relax in outdoor spa or indoor heated swimming pool.

Come and play in the snow with us the weekend.  We can’t wait to meet you!

“‘Hear! hear!’ screamed the jay from a neighboring tree, where I had heard a tittering for some time, ‘winter has a concentrated and nutty kernel, if you know where to look for it.’” – Henry David Thoreau

It is true, winter did arrive here on December 21, 2011, but we have yet to see that brilliant snowfall that we all look so forward to.  We were fortunate enough to have a bit of snow on Christmas but non in the foreseeable future.  We are fortunate to have the cold temperatures and all of our mountains are making snow for the ski season.   All mountains are open with many trails available.  New trails open daily as the evening temperatures continue to allow for snow making.  Never fear, we have yet to see a winter with no snow.  It will be here soon!

On a positive note, all pond hockey fans are having a great season.  The ice is in perfect shape, so bring your skates and enjoy a good, old fashioned pond hockey game.  We have our bonfire lit and smores kits available to enjoy while watching the skaters enjoy the evening.

Cranmore Mountain is kicking off the New Year with Ticket Roll Back Day on Friday, January 6.  Guests can ski and ride all day for only $9.  Also Cranapalooza at Cranmore on Saturday evenings with children’s entertainment.  January 7 will be a magic show at 3:30 and on January 15th the kids can enjoy a visit from Kuddles the Clown.  A lot is happening at Cranmore in the month of January, stop by and check it out.

Black Mountain is hosting the NH Sanctioned Snow Sculpting competition the weekend of January 27, 2012.  If you have not had a chance to view the art work by so many talented sculptors, do not miss this.  The snow sculptors that are created will blow your mind.  Each team has members from a variety of backgrounds that include chefs from fine restaurants, culinary art students and art schools and various civic organizations.  Each team is given a cylinder shaped block of snow 4 feet in diameter by 8 feet tall to create their snow sculptures.  Most will start sculpting on Friday, January 27 and will continue to work through the night.  You must come and see these creations take shape.  All teams have to end sculpting at noon on Sunday, January 29, 2012, in time for judging.

Enjoy the start of this new year and we hope to see you in 2012!

Mind your manners and give thanks!

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

I love that quote!  It is easy to utter the words, “thank you” but to express your gratitude in your actions is truly much more fulfilling.  Nordic Village is giving thanks to all of our wonderful guests this year and we want you to know that we truly appreciate each and every one of you!  We have been doing some wonderful promotions on Facebook and many last minute specials so please check back often to take advantage of our special rates.

Thank you again and we hope to see you soon!

No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace As I have seen in one autumnal face. ~John Donne

It is that wonderful time of year again where we cuddle up on the couch with our fleece blanket while our apple crisp is baking in the oven…watching football of course!  There is nothing better then taking an afternoon with the family to the local apple orchard and picking apples.  Hatches Orchard in Center Conway is a great place to have some apple picking fun.  They have a little farm stand, a picnic area so you can enjoy the warm afternoon sun with a picnic lunch.

Apple crisp is a favorite fall desert, it’s fairly simple to make and does not require a ton of ingredients.  Here is a great recipe I found on Allrecipes.com

Apple Crisp

4 apples – peeled, cored and chopped; 1 dash ground cinnamon; 1 dash ground nutmeg; 1/2 cup walnuts; 1/2 cup pecans; 1/2 cup brown sugar; 1/2 cup all-purpose flour; 4 tablespoons butter (diced) and 1 pinch salt.

preheat oven to 350 degrees; place apples in a pie pan and dust with cinnamon and nutmeg; cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

In a food processor chop nuts with a few short pules; pour in sugar and flour and process to combine; add butter and salt and process until mixture resembles coarse meal.  Sprinkle topping over apples and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Yummmm….warm right out of the oven with some vanilla ice cream.  Now that is the way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon football game.

If apple picking is not your cup of tea, there is a lot going on in the Mount Washington Valley this fall season.  Take a nice drive down the “Kanc” (Kancamagus highway).  That is one of the most scenic drives in New Hampshire.  Visitnh.gov has a great site and a foliage report that is updated daily.

Conway Scenic Railroad will be the site of great fun when it hosts its 37th Railfans’ Weekend on Saturday & Sunday, September 17 & 18. There will be frequent departures of passenger trains and mixed passenger/freight trains, powered by diesel and STEAM.

Designed not only for avid railfans, but also for the entire family, the event will feature an outdoor Railroadiana flea market, displays of special equipment, collectors’ displays, a turn-of-the-last century operating turntable, motorcars, as well as the chance to try an old-fashioned hand car and rail velocipede, a 3-wheel, human-powered vehicle created in the Victorian age, also known as a “boneshaker.”

Also this coming weekend is the opening of the Sherman Farm Corn Maze.  This years design is Tim Thomas.  The maize will be open weekends through the end of October.  There is a lot to do at Sherman Farm then just getting lost in the maize.  The farmstand is open and the pumpkin patch, so why not pick out that jack-o-lantern while you are there.

If you want to celebrate this fall season with a fabulous haunt, you need to experience The Ghoullog at Cranmore.  the dates for this scary event are weekend evenings in October, starting Friday September 30.  This is a mountain top haunt and you will be riding the chair lift to the top of the mountain.  Cranmore has hosted this event for the last few years and it has become a fall favorite with a lot of our guests.  We have packaged some of our rooms around The Ghoullog so please call for a fall fabulous deal!

The Conway Scenic Railroad will once again be loading passengers on the Pumpkin Patch Express weekends of October 14-16; October 21-23 and October 28-30.  This is a special Halloween train where children will pick a pumpkin, visit a cider mill and of course, doing this while in costume.

Santa’s Village will be open two Saturdays in October for some Halloween fun.  October 22 and October 29 they will have a Silly Spooky Halloween Extravaganza.  Join them for the costume parade, trick or treating and lots of Spooktacular fun.

Maine’s Blue Ribbon Classic, The Fryeburg Fair opens October 2 through October 9.  It has become the Maine’s largest agricultural fair complete with six days of harness racing, a farm museum second to none, the world’s largest steer and oxen show and a reputation known throughout North America.  Even if you are not a fair fan, you must go for the food…caramel apples, hot apple cider, fried dough, apple crisp, kettle corn, turkey dinners…I can almost smell it now.   Visit fryeburgfair.com for a schedule of events.   Nothing like fall and fair time!

So much to see and do this time of year.  Give us a call to book your package.  We look forward to celebrating this magnificent season with you and your family.

Kick Off To Summer

Time to break out the white pants again! We can officially start wearing our white pants this weekend, and we are good until Labor Day.

So much going on starting this Memorial Day Weekend! Here at the resort we have our annual BBQ and all proceeds are donated to the Lafayette Family Cancer Center. Since last year was such a huge success we have decided to do the BBQ every year! We have entertainment scheduled for 7 p.m. with BoBo T Clown, a bouncy house, face painting and pony rides for a small fee. The Wildquack duck race is a must on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. This event has grown in popularity each year and it is a perfect way to spend an afternoon in Jackson. Buy a duck, you could be the big winner!  We will have a total of 3 BBQ’s starting with Saturday, May, 28, Saturday, June 18 and Saturday, July 2.  Purchase a raffle ticket at either BBQ for a chance to win any one of several prizes, including an overnight stay the Merry Manor in Portland, ME, an overnight at Fireside Inn and Suites in Waterville, ME, 2 Story Land tickets and an overnight stay at Nordic Village Resort, 2 tickets for Bretton Woods canopy tour.  Winners will be announced at the July 2 BBQ, need not be present to win!

Our seasonal summer guests arrived last week and are not scheduled to depart until after Columbus Day. Come meet our new friends…Toby the pony and Little Fred the pony. They are going to be working hard all summer putting smiles on all of those little boys and girls who stop by for a pony ride.

Story Land opens for the season Friday, May 27 and will be open weekends only and  open every day starting in mid June. A new water ride attraction has been added this year, Splash Battle. Story Land put this ride in because they knew we were going to have a sunny, hot summer! Don’t forget about Santa’s Village….just a short 45 minute drive from the resort. Our Story Land and Santa’s Village combo package is perfect for a three day excursion. Both parks offer not only fun and excitement, but laughs, smiles and childhood memories to last a lifetime.

Cranmore Adventure Park is the newest summer family attraction in our neck of the woods. They have outdone themselves and we are lucky enough to have them in our own backyard. Opening Memorial Day through Columbus Day with a mountain coaster, aerial adventure park, 400-foot zip line, summer tubing, 18-hole disc golf course, giant swing, vertical reality bungy trampoline, chairlift rides to the summit, cafeteria with beer and wine (that’s what I like), rides, action and more! We have discount coupons at the front desk for anyone interested in spending the day at Cranmore. Leave your skis behind!

Attitash Mountain Resort, just a few miles from the resort also has a mountain coaster, alpine slides, scenic chair ride and climbing wall. Ask for discount vouchers at the front desk before leaving for the day.

Bretton Woods also has summer fun for our guests and you can enjoy a canopy tour which consists of 10 cable ziplines, 2 suspension bridges and 3 rappels or a guided rock climb. Ask the front desk for discounted vouchers for these exciting summer attractions.

Wildcat Mountain’s summer fun consists of gondola rides, ziprider, disc golf, outdoor tours and mountainside cafe.  The views are absolutely spectacular from the gondola.

After partaking in the outdoor activities at Wildcat, enjoy a scenic drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road or enjoy a guided kayaking tour at Great Glen Trails, just right next from Wildcat.

Save some money and go for a hike! Appalachian Mountain Club is a short 15 minute drive from our office and they have trails just right outside the door for all skill levels. Enjoy the waterfalls nearby, and look for a moose. We just had a friendly moose visitor on property and I am sure he will still be around to greet our guests this weekend!

So much to do here in Mt. Washington Valley and it’s definitely worth a two or three day trip…you and your family will not be bored with everything going on this summer.  Check out our website for some great family packages, some even include gas cards.

Start your summer with us and don’t forget the bug spray!

Dancing With The Stars, American Idol, Ipads, Ipods, XBox

Wow, that list could go on and on, given the technology these days.  I think everyone should take a well deserved break and disconnect themselves from all of the technology.  Think of how little time is spent entertaining ourselves without having to watch American Idol?  Even if we are away from a television, we can watch it on our computer or ipad or whatever cool device we might have.

It’s Spring, we should be outside enjoying the smell of the new season, warm sunshine and unplugging our ipads, grab a basketball and play a game of horse with the kids or significant other.  If you don’t like basketball, take a walk and listen to the sounds of spring.  Amazing what you can actually hear if you just stop and relax for a few minutes.    Play catch, bake some cookies, play a game of cards…or stay at Nordic Village this weekend and check out the Inferno race.  It is always exciting to watch people skiing Tuckerman’s.

The first Tuckerman Ravine Inferno Race was held in 1933, a summit to base ski race over the toughest terrain in New England.  Now the race consists of five legs, an 8.3mile run, a 6 mile kayak, an 18 mile bike, a 3 mile hike and a 1 mile ski.  The ski leg of the event starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16.  This is definitely something that is fun to watch and the family would thoroughly enjoy the enthusiasm of these competitors.  Tuckerman’s is the place to be on a warm, spring day!

April vacation is just around the corner, and again, a perfect time to disconnect from technology and reconnect with your loved ones.  The most memorable vacations are those that become traditions.  Kids appreciate quality time spent with family, after all of the whining of course.  The whining that comes from taking away the cell phone, computer, etc.  Look around next time you are away for the weekend and enjoying a meal out, check out all of the people ignoring each other and texting on their phones…is that really fun?

Nordic Village Resort is such a unique property, we offer so much for families and for couples.  The grounds are so beautiful, even during mud season.  It is just nice to walk around and enjoy the natural beauty of the White Mountains.  One of outdoor, heated pools is open year round, as well as our indoor heated pool.  Spend the day relaxing by the pool, take a walk on the trails around the property, play some tennis, basketball or billiards in the pavilion.  We have nightly bon fires near the pond and smore’s to enjoy a perfect evening under the stars.  If you are not interested in dining out, most of our rooms have full kitchens and the family can spend some time together cooking a meal.  For an couples wanting to get away from the hectic pace we all find ourselves caught up in, we have beautiful penthouse rooms with king sized beds, two person jacuzzi tubs, gas fireplace.  Our adult only fitness center is a wonderful to escape and views are absolutely gorgeous while sitting in the outdoor hot tub.  We also have a sauna located at the fitness center and massage services available upon request.

A full moon is on the rise for April 18, book your stay so you can enjoy some star gazing while you are here.  No city lights to disrupt your view here…most rooms have “a view of a lifetime”.

We have some great family fun planned for Easter weekend as well.  Jimmy Jelly Bean Rabbit will be delivering Easter baskets to our younger guests.  We will also be enjoying an egg hunt on Saturday.  Don’t forget we have some fabulous restaurants in the Mount Washington Valley who will be offering Easter brunch.  Book your stay soon so we can secure your brunch reservations, they tend to book up rather quickly.  Shopping at Settler’s Green is always a favorite on a warm, spring day.  Get your summer clothes shopping done at our tax free outlets.  There are some interesting shops in North Conway to discover as well and the park is located in the center of downtown.  Take a break from shopping and enjoy a picnic lunch.  If skiing is still an interest, plenty of snow at Wildcat and I hear the conditions are excellent.  Wildcat Mountain will be open the weekend of April 16 & 17 and April 23 and 24.

So how about a spring get-a-way to rejuvenate yourself.  We are all looking forward to welcoming your smiling faces!  Happy Spring!

Spring is waiting a wee bit longer

If you love spring skiing you should definitely pay us a visit this weekend. We just received 5 inches of snow last night and the ground is nicely covered in a blanket of white.  We have manage to hide some of the mud!

Cranmore will be closing after this weekend so come and enjoy one final run at Cranmore.  Of course Bretton Woods, Attitash and Wildcat are hanging on a for a while longer.  No matter which mountain you choose, the conditions are perfect for spring skiing.

If you are like most people and are sick of winter, Settlers Green OVP is thinking summer and most shops have their swim suits out. The quaint shops in North Conway Village have many spring and summer items available as well.

Don’t forget we have some great spring packages for our guests to take advantage of…Easter packages, Mother’s Day, book early for summer and receive 3rd night half off or 4th night free.  If you would like to take advantage of those great deals, your summer reservation must be booked prior to May 1.

Who is Peter Cottontail?

Peter Cottontail is the Chief Easter Bunny from April Valley, of course!  Peter Cottontail will not be hopping down  Nordic Lane  this Easter but we will have  Jimmy Jelly Bean Rabbit delivering baskets to the door steps of the children on Easter morning.  We have an egg hunt planned as well and will be serving complimentary juice, coffee, tea  and muffins in the Pavillion for everyone to enjoy.

It will be feeling a lot like Spring this weekend with temperatures in the mid 40′s.  The sun will be shining brightly on Saturday so grab your t-shirts, shorts and do a little spring skiing.  Don’t forget the sun block or you will definitely have the raccoon eyes after a day on the slopes.  Cranmore, Attitash and Wildcat all of discounted rates for spring.

Another sure sign that Spring is right around the corner, Daylight Savings Time!  Longer days, mean brighter evenings!  I love it when the sun is still shining at 5 p.m.  So don’t forget to “spring forward” on Sunday.  We do lose an hour of sleep but the longer days are well worth it.

The best reason to book for this weekend is Grant’s Supermarket has corned beef on sale for $1.28 per lb.  You can grab the ingredients for St. Patty’s  Day feast.  We have a great recipe for corned beef cooked in the crock pot.  Stop by the front desk and we will be happy to share it with you.

Enjoy the weekend, I know we will!

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. ~Proverb

I know, it’s not officially spring yet but we are certainly preparing ourselves! Still plenty of snow on the ground for spring skiing…just waiting for those warmer days so we can wear t-shirts on the slopes.  Frost heaves are a sign that spring is on its way.  Growing up on the west coast I was not familiar with frost heaves but since I have been living here for over 15 years, frost heaves and I have a love, hate relationship.  I am glad to see them but hate what they do to my car.

Cranmore has some fun things happening this weekend if you are out and about.  On Saturday from 9 a.m to 2:30 p.m. a WBZ Radio Promo with Tony Mazzorati on the Eating House deck.  This event will include interactive games, apres trivia and free prize giveaways.  Cranapalooza from 3 to 4 p.m. is a Fiesta theme.  Children can enjoy entertainment with Bobo-T-Clown in the Eating House and C-More the penguin with face painting and make your own smores.  Live music from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Zips Pub.

So now you know…Bobo-T-Clown hangs out at Cranmore during the winter months!

Saturday morning at 9 a.m. is the character breakfast at 100 Acre Wood.  They will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Green Eggs & Ham breakfast and the Cat-in-the-Hat.

Plenty of spring skiing at all of the mountains and cross country is still looking great!  We have discounted tickets for all downhill and x-c.  Don’t forget that you can take advantage of the free trails at 100 Acre Wood. We have trails maps for anyone interested in exploring Trails in the Wood!  and bring your dog, as they are welcome.

Anyone interested in spicing up their weekend should check out the Cinco de Marzo celebration happening in downtown North Conway.  It’s the 9th annual chilly chili cook-off stroll in North Conway Village.  Start at the Eastern Slope Inn and get your El Pasaporte stamped.  A filled passport qualifies you to be a judge for the People’s Choice Award.  We have the passports here in the office if you are interested in more information.  This is a fun event and a great time to experience many of the dining establishments and stores in North Conway Village.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the snow, shopping, chili or whatever your desire may be!  And if you are a Bruins fan, Delaneys would be a great place to spend the evening!

Dunkin Donuts

Perfect timing for our new Dunkin Donuts to open for February vacation week.  Well it’s not really “our” Dunkin Donuts but it’s nice to have one close by again.  We have been waiting patiently to have our daily fix of DD’s and so have our guests.  Hopefully Friday is the day you can enjoy your favorite beverage once again.

Vacation week is fast approaching and the skiing has never been better.  I think we might even experience some spring skiing this week, which would be a nice, early treat!  We love winter but we also, love, love Spring!  All seasons are great as it gives us something to look forward to every few months.

If you are not coming up to go skiing, check out the snowshoeing trails at Jackson Ski Touring Foundation.  They have a lot of terrain and experiencing the woods on snow shoes is something that should not be missed.  Theater in the Wood also has snowshoe trails in the 100 Acre Wood.  I have not had a chance to get out there but taking a glance at the trail maps, looks like it would be a great adventure for the family.  We have some snow shoes here that we lend out to our guests so if you stop in early enough, you can enjoy the day and not have to worry about rentals.  We can arrange a picnic lunch for you from the J-Town Deli and you can have lunch on the trail.

If downhill skiing is your pleasure we do have discounted tickets for the mountains for added savings while you are here.  Just inquire at the front desk and our associates will be happy to help you plan your day at the mountain.

Wildcat Mountain has a cardboard box race on February 22 at 2 p.m.  Perfect event for kids!  The only requirement is that the bottom of the box must be cardboard.

Cranmore also has their expanded tubing park and mountain coaster, and we do have discounted tickets for those who prefer a no ski day.  If Cranmore is your mountain of choice, check out their daily events before going to the mountain as they will have night skiing, great apres ski, kids programs, fireworks and so much more.

Ham Ice Arena in Conway will be open for ice skating if you prefer to be indoors.  They are open daily for public skating.  We have the schedule posted in the lobby.

The Diary of Anne Frank is playing at M&D Productions in North Conway.  This play has received rave reviews!  Performances are February 18, 19 at 7 p.m. and February 24, 25 and 26 at 7 p.m.  The theater is in the same shopping plaza as Vito Marcello’s Italian Bistro (formerly Bellinis) so you why not make an evening of it and enjoy a bite to eat before the show.

Sunday, February 27 will be the 22nd Annual Chocolate Festival.  People come from great distances to cross country ski, snowshoe or drive from inn to inn along the trails of the 65 km network at Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring and get great chocolate treats at stops along throughout the network.

Most importantly, a full snow moon is happening on February 18.  Since the heaviest snow usually falls during the month of February, Native American tribes of the north and east most often called this month’s full moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to it as the Full Hunger Moon or Little Famine Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult. Forced to gnaw on bones and sip bone marrow soup for sustenance, the Cherokee named it the Full Bony Moon.

Around the globe, the Celts called February’s moon the Moon of Ice, while the more optimistic Chinese named it the Budding Moon in anticipation of spring.

I like the idea that the Chinese are optimistic and call it the Budding Moon for spring!  Whichever name you choose, enjoy that full moon in one of our outdoor hot tubs!
