“‘Hear! hear!’ screamed the jay from a neighboring tree, where I had heard a tittering for some time, ‘winter has a concentrated and nutty kernel, if you know where to look for it.’” – Henry David Thoreau

It is true, winter did arrive here on December 21, 2011, but we have yet to see that brilliant snowfall that we all look so forward to.  We were fortunate enough to have a bit of snow on Christmas but non in the foreseeable future.  We are fortunate to have the cold temperatures and all of our mountains are making snow for the ski season.   All mountains are open with many trails available.  New trails open daily as the evening temperatures continue to allow for snow making.  Never fear, we have yet to see a winter with no snow.  It will be here soon!

On a positive note, all pond hockey fans are having a great season.  The ice is in perfect shape, so bring your skates and enjoy a good, old fashioned pond hockey game.  We have our bonfire lit and smores kits available to enjoy while watching the skaters enjoy the evening.

Cranmore Mountain is kicking off the New Year with Ticket Roll Back Day on Friday, January 6.  Guests can ski and ride all day for only $9.  Also Cranapalooza at Cranmore on Saturday evenings with children’s entertainment.  January 7 will be a magic show at 3:30 and on January 15th the kids can enjoy a visit from Kuddles the Clown.  A lot is happening at Cranmore in the month of January, stop by and check it out.

Black Mountain is hosting the NH Sanctioned Snow Sculpting competition the weekend of January 27, 2012.  If you have not had a chance to view the art work by so many talented sculptors, do not miss this.  The snow sculptors that are created will blow your mind.  Each team has members from a variety of backgrounds that include chefs from fine restaurants, culinary art students and art schools and various civic organizations.  Each team is given a cylinder shaped block of snow 4 feet in diameter by 8 feet tall to create their snow sculptures.  Most will start sculpting on Friday, January 27 and will continue to work through the night.  You must come and see these creations take shape.  All teams have to end sculpting at noon on Sunday, January 29, 2012, in time for judging.

Enjoy the start of this new year and we hope to see you in 2012!
